Mistra SAMS Living Lab 2
Mistra SAMS is a transdiciplinary research programme situated at the main campus of KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. It provides a forum for knowledge exchange and collaboration between industry, the public sector and research.
The programme is hosted and managed by KTH Royal Institute of Technology in close cooperation with VTI Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute.Together with its partners, Mistra SAMS conducts innovative research on the transformation of mobility, primarily in an urban environment.
ITRL's Role
Using the living lab method, Mistra SAMS aims to understand how a professional work environment closer to home, combined with new mobility services, can operate in practice. The work hub in Tullinge Centrum, Botkyrka municipality was opened on 31st of January, 2019. The hub offers 14 individual flexible workplaces, in combination with shared small telephone rooms, conference / video rooms and other office services.
The area chosen due to the hub having significantly more housing than workplaces, and limited accessibility to the workplaces of most residents. The purpose of this hub is to investigate whether having access to a professional work environment in close proximity to one’s home can encourage them to work locally a few days a week, and whether this facility, along with new mobility services such as MaaS, e-bike sharing etc. can reduce the environmental impact of private car driving.
Research questions
The research questions are broken down into four sub-groups, as follows:
Research questions related to the driving forces of users:
- Explore how people’s lifestyles are affected by mobility and accessibility services.
- What motivates the participants to use the services?
- How can accessibility services be designed in order to fit user needs and contribute to sustainability targets?
Research questions related to the platform:
- What are the key aspects and properties of platforms to reach high customer and stakeholder penetration?
- Which actors (producers, institutions, etc.) are needed for a platform, and what should their roles look like?
- How can a platform enable new sustainable combinations of services?
Research questions related to dissemination and incentives & regulations:
- How can platforms enable different incentives and steering mechanisms to achieve climate targets?
- What are the objectives and motivations of different policy-making actors?
- What are the relationships between the services in the platform, and their physical setting?
Research questions related to the system level:
- How can tested services at the Work Hub be scaled up to a city scale?
- What are the KPIs (key performance indicators) involved in this combination of Mobility service and technology?
- How can this service be evaluated?
With the help of these research questions, ITRL will focus on understanding the system effects of the work hub, along with the mobility related services it offers on the individual, organisation and societal levels. Using this particular setting, the aim is to identify KPIs and develop a framework to evaluate the effects of the Work Hub.
In order to evaluate the effects we plan to utilize interviews and surveys conducted over time in order to follow the users and their employers observe how the hub and its developing services have influenced the different aspects of mobility at the three different levels. These travel patterns in the long run might have a range of impacts on the city, positive or negative, which is what we investigate in this project.
