Inductive bus-charging - what happens when we cut the cord?

The first inductively charged electric bus in the Nordic region was tested in Södertälje during 2017. The demonstration project was a collaboration between the Integrated Transport Research Lab at KTH, Scania, Vattenfall, the Stockholm County Council’s Transport Administration, and the municipality of Södertälje. The research focused at first level on analyzing how this technology would work in the Nordic climate and, beyond the technology, on how public transport stakeholders could collaborate to introduce electric buses in Stockholm region. In this context, optimal charging infrastructure placement becomes a key challenge to address. In this seminar, Maria Xylia presents some of the main technological, environmental, and planning considerations for electric bus adoption in public transport services.

Maria Xylia has a 10-year experience as researcher and consultant within the field of energy and climate systems. She has a Technical Licentiate degree and will defend in May 2018 her PhD in energy systems from KTH Royal Institute of Technology. She has developed, led and/or participated in projects related to sustainable transport with focus on electrification of public transport, as well as techno-economic and environmental studies of energy systems within the transport, industrial, and building sectors. As part of her PhD, Maria developed an optimization model for the most applicable locations for charging infrastructure for electric buses in urban contexts. Maria currently works as an Energy Systems Analyst at Sweco.
