When Walking Becomes Wandering: Enriching Automated Travel Diaries Using Biometric Information

Little is known about how dementia patients are affected by their surroundings in the built environment. There are theories that their surroundings might induce critical conditions such as wandering and elopement, but these theories are hard to test as no current data collection method allows for easy enough interaction suitable to the target group.

This seminar discusses how, using state of the art technologies, a tool has been developed to collect position and biometric information completely implicitly and automatic, without any responsibility put on the participant. By creating a model using multivariate regression, machine learning can help us understand which factors in the built environment are dementia patients negatively, and, in turn, how the risk for these conditions change over time.
