Electrification of trucks – batteries, stationary charging, electric roads or all of them?

With the increase of electric vehicles, society is on the verge of a mobility revolution. However, how to charge all these vehicles remain a key part of the electric transition. We've invited Jakob Rogstadius to discuss the interaction between battery Electric Trucks, Stationary Charging, and Electric Road Systems.

This talk introduces a recent study of different types of interaction effects between Electric Road Systems (ERS), several types of static charging, and truck batteries. Focus will be on methodological strengths and limitations, as well as implications of the findings. Results are based on experiments using a custom-built simulation tool to study millions of freight routes and four truck classes on the Swedish road network. Results show that ERS contributes to reduced cost of transportation, compared to electrification enabled by only static charging options, and that most analyzed freight traffic has a cost incentive to use ERS infrastructure if it is built. Due to the cost advantage, ERS outcompetes other public charging where built and is a good complement to night-time depot charging. ERS is also the only charging solution that has potential to reduce total battery consumption by the transport system, which means the rate of decarbonization can be increased if battery supply is limited.
