ITRL’s focus is on how digitalization, electrification, connectivity and automation can make transport more effective, efficient and sustainable on a system level. Sometimes denoted ‘V2X’, wireless connectivity is often assumed for future use cases in the transportation sector, but the details of what the wireless systems actually offer and what the use cases require, are less often in focus. This seminars examines 4G LTE and 5G NR wireless connectivity aspect in more detail, as applied to the automotive and transportation sector. It gives an overview of use case categories (spanning safety services (ITS), telematics, in-vehicle entertainment, logistics, remote driving, etc), the involved players and industry debates, and gives examples from recent and ongoing 5G trials across the world.

The seminar also aims to highlight suitable topics for research, including both technical aspects such as radio access design and deployment and regulatory and policy aspects, stemming from the insight that the future 4G and 5G systems are part of the society-critical road infrastructure.

Håkan Olofsson has worked in the mobileindustry for 25 years, with aparticular focus on its radio access networkaspects. He joined Ericsson in 1994 and has served in a variety of capacities, mostly dealing with strategic technology development and the evolution from 2G all the way to 5G. His background also includes a managing consultant role at Strategy firm Northstream in Sweden and France. He is currently head of the System Concept program at Development Unit Networks at Ericsson, and Co-Director at ITRL, KTH. Olofsson holds an M.Sc. in physics engineering from Uppsala University, Sweden.

About Ericsson

Ericsson is a leader in supplying 4G and 5G technologies for the automotive and transport sector. In addition to research within the scope of ITRL, Ericsson is active in standardization and regulation of the future communication serving connected vehicles, including 3G Partnership Project (3GPP), Automotive Edge Computing Consortium (AECC) and 5G Automotive Association (5GAA). Research has been conducted in large research collaborations, including EU projects such as 5GCAR and 5G CroCo, Swedish projects such as Chronos and Chronos 2, German projects such as 5G Netmobil, Convex and 5G Connected Mobility. Furthermore, Ericsson has contributed to numerous live trials using 4G and 5G technology and partners from the transport sector, including Scania, Volkswagen, Volvo, BMW, Nissan and Toyota, as well as mobile operators such as Verizon, SKT, DoCoMo and Telia.
